“It’s Our Time” by Marty Casey

In October 2012, I got a text from an old friend I had not spoken to in a few years.  The text simply said “Dude just thinkin bout you here in Maui.  How you doing?”  I responded and let him know I was doing great, excited about the upcoming Lovehammers “Set Fire” CD release and wishin’ I was hanging with him and his girl in Maui!  He responded immediately with “Can you talk?”  I gave him a call and we spent a few minutes catching up on the last few years, where life has taken us and we reminisced about projects we had worked on together in the past.  I was psyched to hear that he was riding high with successful songs he had written for Carrie Underwood, Aerosmith, Mick Jagger, Motley Crue and many others.  He had always been a songwriting mentor of mine because of his genius writing and production skills, his relentless pursuit of the perfect lyric and his name is MARTI!  It’s not often that I meet another person named Marty.  When there are two of us in the same room people get really freaked out!

Nearing the end of our phone conversation, Marti invited me and a guest to come out to Maui and hang out for a week, check out the studio and catch up.  He said that a good time to come was in December because that is when whale season starts and that it is an amazing sight to witness.  I knew that an offer like this was once in a lifetime and told him I would look into flights and see if I could make it happen.  I was intensely promoting the release of “Set Fire” album, traveling across the Midwest doing a radio promo tour, creating new Silver Elements pieces with Marla, working my butt off at my full time job and rehearsing all the new songs for the CD release.  I was just trying to keep my head above water and the trip to Maui gave me something to work towards.

On November 16th our CD “Set Fire” was released and all of the intense promoting had paid off.  Lovehammers debuted at #13 on the Billboard New Artist Album Chart.  We were all blown away and so thankful for all of the fans support.  I felt that the CD Release Party at Joe’s on Weed on December 1st was one of the best shows we have ever had.  The new songs, lighting and sound helped to create one of the most unique rock performances we have ever put together.  There was such a great vibe in the venue.  Over the years the Lovehammers family has grown immensely and I felt proud of all we had accomplished.

The following week we flew to Maui and within a few hours we were greeted upon arrival at the airport, jumped into Marti’s convertible, headed out for a sushi dinner overlooking the ocean and then took a walk on the moon lit beach.  I could not believe we were actually here.  It was a dream.

Marti and Kari showed us around the island for the next few days and we always had a guitar with us.  Whether it was lying on the beach, chilling by the pool or having a late night BBQ, we were always strumming on that guitar.  One evening while we were watching the sunset, I started playing a song that I have been strumming for about 12 years.  It was a guitar piece I had developed but never really knew what to do with it.  Marti asked “Hey, did you write that?”  I told him I wrote it years ago.  He asked if I had any lyrics written for it and I sang him a few lines.  He said, “Let’s finish your song!” Marti has a brilliant way of taking the initial idea and expanding on it, rearranging it and perfecting the lyrics.  We worked on it for about an hour and BOOM…. We had the melody and the arrangement.  It was like magic, this idea that had been circulating in my mind for so many years was finally born. The next afternoon  we sat by the pool and worked out all of the lyrics.  It was so much fun shouting out ideas and we would finish each others sentences.  Every lyric just flowed so effortlessly and we were laughing as each line was completed.  I was in Hawaii, I was writing music with my mentor and after years of feeling unsettled and trying to find my place, I felt like I had finally landed.  I felt all the stress and worry I carry around on a regular basis slide off my shoulders.  I felt excitement for all of the good things to come and used this positive energy to craft each lyric.  I realized “I am alive in this moment” …. I have been trying to get here for years.

Marti and I walked back to the studio and I recorded the guitar parts.  I usually hand off the guitar parts I write to the guitar players in the room but Marti felt it was important I play the parts myself because the performance carried a lot of emotion.  When we completed the guitar arrangement, I sang the newly constructed lyrics over the guitar one time and we tweaked a line or two.  Then I sang it again a second time and that is the final take used for the song.  A vocal has never come so effortlessly and felt so right.

We took a drive along the ocean and played the recording in the convertible as the ocean breeze was whipping thru our hair.  It was so exciting to have this new song completed. We arrived at a sunset cruise Marti had arranged for us and the whales were in full force that evening.  We were in awe at the size of these magnificent creatures.  On the cruise, Marti and I started talking about what a positive feeling the song and lyric emoted.  We thought it was the perfect song to kick off the new year.  We came up with the idea to make a picture video that would tell the story of the song.  A video that will make people feel all the hope and promise of the new year…Remembering where we have been and shining a positive light on all that lies ahead.  I called the two most creative people that I know (Susie & Steph) and asked them to help me with the video.  We discussed the different ideas that each of us had and then they got to work.  What they have put together has blown me away.  I think you will love the video too!

In years past, I have come up with a quote for the new year.  This year the quote is “It’s Our Time”.  I think the lyrics say it all and they are attached below.  The song/video is released today January 1, 2013 on YouTube.  The song can also be found on I-Tunes today as well.

I wish everyone an amazing year!!!  I thank you for all of your continued support and it feels so good to share this song and video with you on the first day of the new year.  We all have dreams we want to accomplish this year… Let’s make it happen!

All the Best to You and Yours,

Marty Casey

It’s Our Time
By Marty Casey & Marti Frederiksen

Tonight we’re gonna break the chains
Wash away our yesterday
Tonight we’re gonna ride the storm
To find what we been waiting for

Just let go
All our dreams will awake
The world we know
Say goodbye

It’s Our time
It’s Our time
The stars have aligned and
The future Is shinning so bright

Tonight I’m giving all I can
Flying high like superman
To knowing when it just feels right
I wanna be with you tonight

All your tears
I will wash ’em away
Leave your fears
Far behind

I’ve been thinking about this, Mr. Hand. If I’m here and you’re here, doesn’t that make it OUR TIME ? ..Certainly, there’s nothing wrong with a little feast on OUR TIME.
